Guanajuato is one of the most photogenic cities in Mexico.
With that said I decided to share what I consider the 7 most Instagram worthy spots in Guanjuato. Of course you can wander down any random street here and find new magic. This is just a guide if your looking for some great photo ideas during your trip!
1) CALLE DE SOPENA
On the way to the Jardin de la Union (the main square in the historic city center) you pass some lovely colorful buildings. Calle De Sopena also features papel picados hanging between the buildings which just adds to the charm.
2) THE TOP OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GUANAJUATO
One of the landmarks of this college town is the University of Guanajuato’s main building. It is in its own right photo-worthy. But I found it more interesting to scale the massive steps and look out into the city for a snap. The colorful building facades blend well together and you catch both the Basilica Church and El Pipla statue in one shot.
3) CALLE MEDIZABAL OVERLOOKING THE HIDALGO MARKET
The giant clock tower at the top of Hidalgo Market is a must see in Guanjuato. It was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (famous of course for the Eiffel tower ). Instead of getting up close I recommend going up the nearest street: Calle Medizabal. The colorful buildings in the periphery only enhance to the type of photo you can take from this angle.
4) THE INTERIOR OF THE HIDALGO MARKET
The interior of the Hidalgo Market is an endless sea of vendors. From Mexican food, snacks, and artisinal crafts most of your souvenir shopping is covered inside. If your looking for a great shot I suggest looking upward and heading upstairs! The upper level not only has many vendors, but a birds-eye view of the entire sprawling complex. It’s a great spot to set-up a photo that expresses just all the organized insanity that goes on inside here.
5) PLAZA DE SAN ROQUE
Right next to the San Roque Temple is a very photogenic street that signifies to me a lot of the beauty of Guanjuato. Red flowers, multiple colors, and a small balcony add to a nice serene shot. While your here take some photos of the crosses in front of the Temple. Also scale the green bleachers nearby to get some higher angle shots!
6) PLAZA DE SAN FERNANDO
Plaza de San Fernando is a great spot to unwind at a restaurant or just people watch as it connects to the nearby University. The fountain in the middle sets up a nice shot that you can take from multiple angles. I got lucky that a bird was chilling on the top during my photo!
7) BESAME CAFE
I stumbled onto this one by accident. Now of course a Funicular ride to the top of the city to snap an iconic shot next to the statue of El Pipila is a must. But may I recommend in addition – walk just a few minutes down the road and stop into the Besame Cafe. You will be treated to an unimpeded view of not only the city, but three chairs on a little terrace overlooking it all. The food and drinks were cheap and tasty at this spot as well! This was the shot that I most enjoyed taking and would be great to post on Instagram.
That sums up just 7 of the hundreds of instagram worthy spots in Guanjuato. Tell me in the comments which shot is your favorite and if you’ve been to Guanajuato where your favorite place is to snap a photo!
